Such blurry Kanji!!! While I'm working on the next chapter, I ran across this the other day. I thought it might be of interest to everyone.

Is there any particular difference between the files, Ronin? The bottom link works well enough, but I can't get the one above to cooperate.
ReplyDeleteAs an aside, at first I thought this would have been "Archive," but was quite surprised to see that it wasn't. I do wonder why he considered the original run of Birdy to have gone up to 2001 - as far as I can tell, the only volume of the original makes for about 80 pages, unless it was never fully translated.
It was canceled, I think, after the 3rd chapter. Then the author changed the publishers and remade the story (similar, but still different enough).
ReplyDeleteBoth files have basically the same contents, just links inside and compression differ.
ReplyDeleteHere's mirror:

One volume of first Tetsuwan Birdy was published in 1996 and has 10 chapters, only 3 are scanlated to english, with low quality images:

There is whole volume available (1200px resolution), but we need translation for it.
Oh, nifty. I certainly did not know that. Thank you for the information!
ReplyDeleteAahhh, forgot most important thing - Ixioran-san - please, could yoou tell us what's said about fate of series in last, 13th volume of TB Evolution, is it really the end? :o
ReplyDeleteI really hope not..
Cool, thanks for the links to those. Kinda disappointed that it's not directly all Birdy related art, but a lot of those other Masami Yuki manga's have caught my interest now.
ReplyDeleteAlso not to sound like a jerk or anything, but have you thought about at one point translating/finishing the translation (as I think a few chapters have already been done) of the original Birdy one-shot volume?
Mah Nigga Ronin, if you were the de facto Birdy provider on the internet before, you sure as fuck are now.
ReplyDeleteNever thought I'd ever see a Birdy Artbook. Mucho thank yous!
Because I mentioned "Archive" before, I might as well provide a link of sorts...

...Scrolling down, you can see a few of the pages.
It also seems to have a collection of early strips in it - it looks like his artwork was much improved from the original release of the manga. Unless mistaken, I'd guess those were prototypes for either the OVA or the revised series you're translating now?
A couple of things to respond to...The original volume of Tetsuwan Birdy is a truncated version of around volumes 1-9 of the remake. It's written for younger readers in mind so the later one is more interesting for an older reader. Not really worth translating because the later one is much better and has about the same story.
ReplyDeleteThe last panel of Evolution #13 shows Birdy "breaking the fourth wall" and she says, "Thank you so much for reading for 10 years". So, it looks like it's done. Gimme a couple of years and I'll get there. :D
That archive book is what I use for a reference guide. Lots of stuff in there including spin off stories like Black Magic Knight (2001) and King in the Labyrinth (1996). It's from 2008 so it doesn't have anything from Evolution in it.
Again, more interesting information, and more questions pending... :p
ReplyDeleteIf you're ever able to complete translating Birdy at some point, would you consider translating Archive as well?
Cheers, and many thanks for everything so far!
Thanks for answers. So so bad that it looks like end, I still have glimmer of hope it will continue after some time..
ReplyDeleteA master writer can continue a story for a very long time indeed, but even Dune needed to come to a close, if only because Frank couldn't manage to kill off Duncan Idaho.
ReplyDeleteCertainly, I enjoy Birdy (as does everyone here), but assumedly most of us only have a vague idea what is in store for the volumes to come. I'd like to think Masami is ending the arc where it needs to end. And if not, Birdy is assumedly quite an important character to him; otherwise he wouldn't have picked her up again. I'd like to think you won't be in want at closure, and if you are, well, wait a few years...
:D
Hmm, possibly I should have translated the archive first. I was flipping through it earlier and found a tiny paragraph that explains an ability that Birdy has that is not really covered in the manga or in the anime. She is able to increase her body mass at will. This explains why she was able to sink Ondine like a rock in the underwater fight, stop the charge of the monster in the hospital basement, and when Gnome tackled her out of Lee's apartment window she squashed the car below like a bug.
ReplyDeleteThat's an interesting explanation, though at first I'd say it doesn't make much sense.
ReplyDelete...If considering science fiction mechanics, what makes more sense (and conveniently meshes in well with the '96 OVA) is that she's able to manipulate gravitational acceleration/force around her. Mass is constant, but due to being able to manipulate force (g), and possilby its vector, she may become heavier, lighter, or even stand on the side of a building. Just my thoughts. :)
For those that may not know, weight is the product of mass and gravity, which is a force.
And all this time I thought she could jump a couple hundred feet because of super strength. Like the Incredible Hulk. Incidentally, in future chapters the devices attached to her head and hands do exhibit other functions. Not all of her abilities come from being a test tube baby.
ReplyDeleteRegardless, I would like to see first original Birdy volume translation completed some time in future :P Newer and more elaborate doesn't always mean better, for example - personally I liked first Birdy 4 episode ova more than 2 tv series. Even if it is worse, I still consider it worth reading :>.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to read it too, but not before the current series is finished. Maybe between this and Evolution, maybe after Evolution.
