It's interesting to compare Birdy and Tsutomu's relationship in the manga to the anime.
In Decode, The loss of Tute drove them closer together and they became almost like siblings after a few episodes. Here, they have a hostility that turns gradually into a begrudging respect and you finally have Tsutomu admitting that he trusts Birdy and is grateful for the sacrifice she made to save him, but it is probably seeing her go through everything she did to help Chigira that brought him around to see Birdy in a more positive light.
